Holman Christian Standard BibleNET Bible
Listen to this, house of Jacob-- those who are called by the name Israel and have descended from Judah, who swear by the name of Yahweh and declare the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness. 1Listen to this, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name 'Israel,' and are descended from Judah, who take oaths in the name of the LORD, and invoke the God of Israel--but not in an honest and just manner.
For they are named after the Holy City, and lean on the God of Israel; His name is Yahweh of Hosts. 2Indeed, they live in the holy city; they trust in the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD who commands armies.
I declared the past events long ago; they came out of My mouth; I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they occurred. 3"I announced events beforehand, I issued the decrees and made the predictions; suddenly I acted and they came to pass.
Because I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is iron and your forehead bronze, 4I did this because I know how stubborn you are. Your neck muscles are like iron and your forehead like bronze.
therefore I declared to you long ago. I announced it to you before it occurred, so you could not claim, 'My idol caused them; my carved image and cast idol control them.' 5I announced them to you beforehand; before they happened, I predicted them for you, so you could never say, 'My image did these things, my idol, my cast image, decreed them.'
You have heard it. Observe it all. Will you not acknowledge it? From now on I will announce new things to you, hidden things that you have not known. 6You have heard; now look at all the evidence! Will you not admit that what I say is true? From this point on I am announcing to you new events that are previously unrevealed and you do not know about.
They have been created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today, so you could not claim, 'I already knew them!' 7Now they come into being, not in the past; before today you did not hear about them, so you could not say, 'Yes, I know about them.'
You have never heard; you have never known; For a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew that you were very treacherous, and were known as a rebel from birth. 8You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth.
I will delay My anger for the honor of My name, and I will restrain Myself for your benefit and for My praise, so that you will not be destroyed. 9For the sake of my reputation I hold back my anger; for the sake of my prestige I restrain myself from destroying you.
Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. 10Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have purified you in the furnace of misery.
I will act for My own sake, indeed, My own, for how can I be defiled? I will not give My glory to another." 11For my sake alone I will act, for how can I allow my name to be defiled? I will not share my glory with anyone else!
Listen to Me, Jacob, and Israel, the one called by Me: I am He; I am the first, I am also the last. 12Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I summoned! I am the one; I am present at the very beginning and at the very end.
My own hand founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens; when I summoned them, they stood up together. 13Yes, my hand founded the earth; my right hand spread out the sky. I summon them; they stand together.
All of you, assemble and listen! Who among the idols has declared these things? The LORD loves him; he will accomplish His will against Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans. 14All of you, gather together and listen! Who among them announced these things? The LORD's ally will carry out his desire against Babylon; he will exert his power against the Babylonians.
I--I have spoken; yes, I have called him; I have brought him, and he will succeed in his mission. 15I, I have spoken--yes, I have summoned him; I lead him and he will succeed.
Approach Me and listen to this. From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time anything existed, I was there." And now the Lord GOD has sent me and His Spirit. 16Approach me! Listen to this! From the very first I have not spoken in secret; when it happens, I am there." So now, the sovereign LORD has sent me, accompanied by his spirit.
This is what the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says: I am Yahweh your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who leads you in the way you should go. 17This is what the LORD, your protector, says, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you how to succeed, who leads you in the way you should go.
If only you had paid attention to My commands. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. 18If only you had obeyed my commandments, prosperity would have flowed to you like a river, deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea.
Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand, and the offspring of your body like its grains; their name would not be cut off or eliminated from My presence. 19Your descendants would have been as numerous as sand, and your children like its granules. Their name would not have been cut off and eliminated from my presence.
Leave Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans! Declare with a shout of joy, proclaim this, let it go out to the end of the earth; announce," The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob!" 20Leave Babylon! Flee from the Babylonians! Announce it with a shout of joy! Make this known! Proclaim it throughout the earth! Say, 'The LORD protects his servant Jacob.
They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts; He made water flow for them from the rock; He split the rock, and water gushed out." 21They do not thirst as he leads them through dry regions; he makes water flow out of a rock for them; he splits open a rock and water flows out.'
There is no peace for the wicked," says the LORD. 22There will be no prosperity for the wicked," says the LORD.
