International Standard VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
"And now Son of Man, you are to take a brick, set it in front of you, and inscribe on it the outline of the city—that is, Jerusalem.1Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.
You are to lay siege against it, build a rampart around it, set a bulwark against it, encircle it with a berm, set up camps against it, and place battering rams around it. 2Then lay siege against it: construct a siege wall, build a ramp, pitch military camps, and place battering rams against it on all sides.
Then you are to take a flat, iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. "Next, you are to turn toward it, oppose it, and place it under siege, because you are to lay siege to it. All of this will serve as a sign to the house of Israel.3Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel."
"Now as for you, you are to sleep on your left side, symbolically bearing the punishment of the house of Israel while you're counting the days you'll be sleeping on your left side to bear symbolically the punishment for their sin. 4Then lie down on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. You will bear their iniquity for the number of days you lie on your side.
I've assigned you to sleep this way for 390 days, representing the years they've been sinning, as you bear symbolically the punishment of the house of Israel. 5For I have assigned you the years of their iniquity according to the number of days you lie down, 390 days; so you will bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.
When you have completed this, you are to sleep on your right side, symbolically bearing the iniquity of Judah for 40 days. Each day that I've assigned to you represents one year. 6When you have completed these days, lie down again, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.
After this, you are to turn toward the rampart of Jerusalem and oppose it with your bare arms, because I'm going to prophesy about it. 7You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and prophesy against it.
Look! I'll tie you up so that you're unable to turn from one side to the other until you've completed your siege."8Be aware that I will put cords on you so you cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your siege."
"Furthermore, you are to take some wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, and mix them together in one container. Then you are to make bread from these grains sufficient to supply you through the time during which you'll be sleeping on your side. You are to eat it for 390 days. 9Also take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt. Put them in a single container and make them into bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the number of days you lie on your side, 390 days.
The food that you'll be eating is to consist of portions weighing 20 shekels, to be consumed daily at regular intervals.10The food you eat each day will be eight ounces by weight; you will eat it from time to time.
You are to measure one sixth of one hin of water each time you drink it. 11You are also to drink water by measure, a sixth of a gallon, which you will drink from time to time.
You are to eat it as barley cakes and bake it right in front of them, using dried human dung for cooking fuel." 12You will eat it as you would a barley cake and bake it over dried human excrement in their sight."
Then the LORD said, "This is how the Israelis will be eating unclean food among the nations, where I'll be sending them."13The LORD said, "This is how the Israelites will eat their bread--ceremonially unclean--among the nations where I will banish them."
"Now, Lord GOD," I replied, "I've never been defiled, ever since I was young until now. I haven't eaten an animal that died on its own or was torn by beasts, and no unclean meat has ever entered my mouth!"14But I said, "Oh, Lord GOD, I have never been defiled. From my youth until now I have not eaten anything that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts. And impure meat has never entered my mouth."
"Okay," he responded. "I'll allow you to substitute cow's dung for human dung. Cook your food over that."15He replied to me, "Look, I will let you use cow dung instead of human excrement, and you can make your bread over that."
He also told me, "Son of Man, look! I'm about to disrupt the source of bread in Jerusalem. As a result, they'll ration bread by weight while their terror continues to grow and they'll ration drinking water while their horror continues to mount! 16Then He said to me, "Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat bread rationed by weight and in dread drink water by measure.
Indeed, they'll need bread and water, but everyone will be panic-stricken as they waste away in their iniquity."17So they will lack bread and water; everyone will be devastated and waste away because of their iniquity."
