This is what the Lord GOD showed me: Look! A basket of summer fruit! 1The sovereign LORD showed me this: I saw a basket of summer fruit.
And he was asking, "What do you see, Amos?" I answered, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD told me, "The end approaches for my people Israel. I will no longer spare them. 2He said, "What do you see, Amos?" I replied, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come for my people Israel! I will no longer overlook their sins.
At that time," declares the Lord GOD, "the temple songs will be wailing. Many bodies will accumulate everywhere.3The women singing in the temple will wail in that day." The sovereign LORD is speaking. "There will be many corpses littered everywhere! Be quiet!"
"Hear this, you who are swallowing up the needy, who intend to make the poor of the land fail,4Listen to this, you who trample the needy, and do away with the destitute in the land.
and who are saying, 'When will the New Moon fade so we may sell grain, and the Sabbath conclude so we may market winnowed wheat?— shortchanging the measure, raising the price, falsifying the scales by treachery,5You say, "When will the new moon festival be over, so we can sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, so we can open up the grain bins? We're eager to sell less for a higher price, and to cheat the buyer with rigged scales!
buying the poor for cash, and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling chaff mixed in with the wheat.'6We're eager to trade silver for the poor, a pair of sandals for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!"
"The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: I will never forget anything they have done.7The LORD confirms this oath by the arrogance of Jacob: "I swear I will never forget all you have done!
Surely the land will tremble because of this, won't it? And all who live in it will mourn, won't they? The entire land will swell up like a flooded river. It will be stirred up and then will sink like the river of Egypt.8Because of this the earth will quake, and all who live in it will mourn. The whole earth will rise like the River Nile, it will surge upward and then grow calm, like the Nile in Egypt.
It will come about at that time," declares the Lord GOD, "I will cause the sun to set at noon and the earth to darken in the daylight.9In that day," says the sovereign LORD, "I will make the sun set at noon, and make the earth dark in the middle of the day.
I will turn your festivals into mourning, and all of your songs to dirges. I will cause all of you to put on sackcloth and to shave all of your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son, and its conclusion will be like the end of a bitter day."10I will turn your festivals into funerals, and all your songs into funeral dirges. I will make everyone wear funeral clothes and cause every head to be shaved bald. I will make you mourn as if you had lost your only son; when it ends it will indeed have been a bitter day.
"Look! The days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine throughout the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water— but rather a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.11Be certain of this, the time is coming," says the sovereign LORD, "when I will send a famine through the land--not a shortage of food or water but an end to divine revelation!
People will stagger from sea to sea, from north to east. They will run back and forth, searching for a message from the LORD, but they won't find it.12People will stagger from sea to sea, and from the north around to the east. They will wander about looking for a revelation from the LORD, but they will not find any.
At that time, the beautiful virgins will faint, as will the strong young men—from thirst.13In that day your beautiful young women and your young men will faint from thirst.
Those who have been swearing oaths by the sin of Samaria, or who say, 'As your god lives, Dan…' or who say, 'As the way of Beer-sheba lives…'— will fall, and will never rise again."14These are the ones who now take oaths in the name of the sinful idol goddess of Samaria. They vow, 'As surely as your god lives, O Dan,' or 'As surely as your beloved one lives, O Beer Sheba!' But they will fall down and not get up again."
