Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.2To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,3As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.4nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:5But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;6For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.7wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;8But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,9realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;10and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.11according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service,
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.13even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief;
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.14and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.15It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.16Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;18This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight,
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:19keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.20Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.
