For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.1Be gracious to me, God, according to your faithful love; according to your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.2Completely wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.
Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.4Against you--you alone--I have sinned and done this evil in your sight. So you are right when you pass sentence; you are blameless when you judge.
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.6Surely you desire integrity in the inner self, and you teach me wisdom deep within.
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.9Turn your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.11Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.12Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.13Then I will teach the rebellious your ways, and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God--God of my salvation--and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; you are not pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. You will not despise a broken and humbled heart, God.
By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.18In your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem.
Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.19Then you will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
