Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one with his household:1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; each came with his family:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.4Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt.5The total number of Jacob's descendants was 70; Joseph was already in Egypt.
Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.6Then Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died.
But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them.7But the Israelites were fruitful, increased rapidly, multiplied, and became extremely numerous so that the land was filled with them.
Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.8A new king, who had not known Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
He said to his people, "Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.9He said to his people, "Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and powerful than we are.
"Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land."10Let us deal shrewdly with them; otherwise they will multiply further, and if war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country."
So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.11So the Egyptians assigned taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities for Pharaoh.
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel.12But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread so that the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.
The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel to labor rigorously;13They worked the Israelites ruthlessly
and they made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously imposed on them.14and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them.
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah;15Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, "
and he said, "When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live."16When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. If the child is a son, kill him, but if it's a daughter, she may live."
But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live.17The Hebrew midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.
So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?"18So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?"
The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them."19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife can get to them."
So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.20So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous.
Because the midwives feared God, He established households for them.21Since the midwives feared God, He gave them families.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive."22Pharaoh then commanded all his people: "You must throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile, but let every daughter live."
