Proverbs 6
NASB Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New American Standard Bible 1995New International Version
My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor, Have given a pledge for a stranger,1My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
If you have been snared with the words of your mouth, Have been caught with the words of your mouth,2you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.
Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself; Since you have come into the hand of your neighbor, Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.3So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go--to the point of exhaustion-- and give your neighbor no rest!
Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids;4Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter's hand And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.5Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise,6Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
Which, having no chief, Officer or ruler,7It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
Prepares her food in the summer And gathers her provision in the harvest.8yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?9How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
"A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest "--10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest--
Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man.11and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
A worthless person, a wicked man, Is the one who walks with a perverse mouth,12A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, Who points with his fingers;13who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,
Who with perversity in his heart continually devises evil, Who spreads strife.14who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up conflict.
Therefore his calamity will come suddenly; Instantly he will be broken and there will be no healing.15Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:16There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,18a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.19a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother;20My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck.21Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.
When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you.22When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life23For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,
To keep you from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.24keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.
Do not desire her beauty in your heart, Nor let her capture you with her eyelids.25Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread, And an adulteress hunts for the precious life.26For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man's wife preys on your very life.
Can a man take fire in his bosom And his clothes not be burned?27Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
Or can a man walk on hot coals And his feet not be scorched?28Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
So is the one who goes in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.29So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
Men do not despise a thief if he steals To satisfy himself when he is hungry;30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He must give all the substance of his house.31Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; He who would destroy himself does it.32But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
Wounds and disgrace he will find, And his reproach will not be blotted out.33Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.
For jealousy enrages a man, And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.34For jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
He will not accept any ransom, Nor will he be satisfied though you give many gifts.35He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
