For the music director; by David. Fools say to themselves, "There is no God." They sin and commit evil deeds; none of them does what is right. 1The fool says in his heart, "There's no God." They are corrupt; they do vile deeds. There is no one who does good.
The LORD looks down from heaven at the human race, to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God. 2The LORD looks down from heaven on the human race to see if there is one who is wise, one who seeks God.
Everyone rejects God; they are all morally corrupt. None of them does what is right, not even one! 3All have turned away; all alike have become corrupt. There is no one who does good, not even one.
All those who behave wickedly do not understand--those who devour my people as if they were eating bread, and do not call out to the LORD. 4Will evildoers never understand? They consume my people as they consume bread; they do not call on the LORD.
They are absolutely terrified, for God defends the godly. 5Then they will be filled with dread, for God is with those who are righteous.
You want to humiliate the oppressed, even though the LORD is their shelter. 6You sinners frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the LORD is his refuge.
I wish the deliverance of Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the well-being of his people, may Jacob rejoice, may Israel be happy! 7Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.
