| 1A musical composition by David, which he sang to the LORD concerning a Benjaminite named Cush. O LORD my God, in you I have taken shelter. Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me! | 1LORD, my God, I seek refuge in you. Deliver me from those who persecute me! Rescue me! |
| 2Otherwise they will rip me to shreds like a lion; they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me. | 2Otherwise, they will rip me to shreds like a lion, tearing me apart with no one to rescue me. |
| 3O LORD my God, if I have done what they say, or am guilty of unjust actions, | 3LORD, my God, if I have done this thing, if there is injustice on my hands, |
| 4or have wronged my ally, or helped his lawless enemy, | 4if I have rewarded those who did me good with evil, if I have plundered my enemy without justification, |
| 5may an enemy relentlessly chase me and catch me; may he trample me to death and leave me lying dishonored in the dust. (Selah) | 5then, let my enemy pursue me, let him overtake me, and let him trample my life to the ground. Interlude Let him put my honor into the dust. |
| 6Stand up angrily, LORD! Rise up with raging fury against my enemies! Wake up for my sake and execute the judgment you have decreed for them! | 6Get up, LORD, in your anger! Rise up, because of the fury of my enemies; Arouse yourself for me; you have ordained justice. |
| 7The countries are assembled all around you; take once more your rightful place over them! | 7Let the assembly of the peoples gather around you, and you will sit high above them. |
| 8The LORD judges the nations. Vindicate me, LORD, because I am innocent, because I am blameless, O Exalted One! | 8For the LORD will judge the peoples. Judge me according to my righteousness, LORD, and according to my integrity, Exalted One. |
| 9May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end! But make the innocent secure, O righteous God, you who examine inner thoughts and motives! | 9Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. For you are the righteous God who discerns the inner thoughts. |
| 10The Exalted God is my shield, the one who delivers the morally upright. | 10God is my shield, the one who delivers the upright in heart. |
| 11God is a just judge; he is angry throughout the day. | 11God is a righteous judge, a God who is angry with sinners every day. |
| 12If a person does not repent, God sharpens his sword and prepares to shoot his bow. | 12If the ungodly one doesn't repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will string his bow and prepare it. |
| 13He prepares to use deadly weapons against him; he gets ready to shoot flaming arrows. | 13He prepares weapons of death for himself, he makes his arrows into fiery shafts. |
| 14See the one who is pregnant with wickedness, who conceives destructive plans, and gives birth to harmful lies-- | 14But the wicked one travails with evil, he conceives malice and gives birth to lies. |
| 15he digs a pit and then falls into the hole he has made. | 15He digs a pit, even excavates it; then he fell into the hole that he had made. |
| 16He becomes the victim of his own destructive plans and the violence he intended for others falls on his own head. | 16The trouble he planned will return on his own head, and his violence will descend on his skull. |
| 17I will thank the LORD for his justice; I will sing praises to the sovereign LORD! | 17But as for me, I will praise the LORD for his righteousness, and I will sing to the name of the LORD Most High. |
