Then Job replied: 1But Job answered and said,
"How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the person who has no strength! 2How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?
How you have advised the one without wisdom, and abundantly revealed your insight! 3How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?
To whom did you utter these words? And whose spirit has come forth from your mouth? 4To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
"The dead tremble--those beneath the waters and all that live in them. 5Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.
The underworld is naked before God; the place of destruction lies uncovered. 6Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.
He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth on nothing. 7He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
He locks the waters in his clouds, and the clouds do not burst with the weight of them. 8He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
He conceals the face of the full moon, shrouding it with his clouds. 9He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
He marks out the horizon on the surface of the waters as a boundary between light and darkness. 10He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
The pillars of the heavens tremble and are amazed at his rebuke. 11The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.
By his power he stills the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab the great sea monster to pieces. 12He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.
By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. 13By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
Indeed, these are but the outer fringes of his ways! How faint is the whisper we hear of him! But who can understand the thunder of his power?" 14Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?
