| 1This saying is trustworthy: "If someone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a good work." | 1Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. |
| 2The overseer then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher, | 2Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, |
| 3not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money. | 3not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. |
| 4He must manage his own household well and keep his children in control without losing his dignity. | 4He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. |
