New International VersionEnglish Standard Version
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there,1On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.
When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
"Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come."4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.6Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so,8And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside9When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom
and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.11This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.12After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.13The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.14In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.15And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a market!"16And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
The Jews then responded to him, "What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?"18So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
They replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?"20The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
But the temple he had spoken of was his body.21But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.22When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.
But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people.24But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people
He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.25and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
