For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.2Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.4Against You--You alone--I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.6Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.9Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.11Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.12Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.13Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.
Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.
May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem.18In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.19Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
