A prophecy: The word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrak and will come to rest on Damascus-- for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel are on the LORD--1An oracle of the word of the LORD concerning the land of Hadrach, with its focus on Damascus: The eyes of all humanity, especially of the tribes of Israel, are toward the LORD,
and on Hamath too, which borders on it, and on Tyre and Sidon, though they are very skillful.2as are those of Hamath also, which adjoins Damascus, and Tyre and Sidon, though they consider themselves to be very wise.
Tyre has built herself a stronghold; she has heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the dirt of the streets.3Tyre built herself a fortification and piled up silver like dust and gold like the mud of the streets!
But the Lord will take away her possessions and destroy her power on the sea, and she will be consumed by fire.4Nevertheless the Lord will evict her and shove her fortifications into the sea--she will be consumed by fire.
Ashkelon will see it and fear; Gaza will writhe in agony, and Ekron too, for her hope will wither. Gaza will lose her king and Ashkelon will be deserted.5Ashkelon will see and be afraid; Gaza will be in great anguish, as will Ekron, for her hope will have been dried up. Gaza will lose her king, and Ashkelon will no longer be inhabited.
A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod, and I will put an end to the pride of the Philistines.6A mongrel people will live in Ashdod, for I will greatly humiliate the Philistines.
I will take the blood from their mouths, the forbidden food from between their teeth. Those who are left will belong to our God and become a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.7I will take away their abominable religious practices; then those who survive will become a community of believers in our God, like a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.
But I will encamp at my temple to guard it against marauding forces. Never again will an oppressor overrun my people, for now I am keeping watch.8Then I will surround my temple to protect it like a guard from anyone crossing back and forth; so no one will cross over against them anymore as an oppressor, for now I myself have seen it.
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.9Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Look! Your king is coming to you: he is legitimate and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey--on a young donkey, the foal of a female donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.10I will remove the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be removed. Then he will announce peace to the nations. His dominion will be from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.11Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.
Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.12Return to the stronghold, you prisoners, with hope; today I declare that I will return double what was taken from you.
I will bend Judah as I bend my bow and fill it with Ephraim. I will rouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece, and make you like a warrior's sword.13I will bend Judah as my bow; I will load the bow with Ephraim, my arrow! I will stir up your sons, Zion, against yours, Greece, and I will make you, Zion, like a warrior's sword.
Then the LORD will appear over them; his arrow will flash like lightning. The Sovereign LORD will sound the trumpet; he will march in the storms of the south,14Then the LORD will appear above them, and his arrow will shoot forth like lightning; the Lord GOD will blow the trumpet and will sally forth on the southern storm winds.
and the LORD Almighty will shield them. They will destroy and overcome with slingstones. They will drink and roar as with wine; they will be full like a bowl used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.15The LORD who rules over all will guard them, and they will prevail and overcome with sling stones. Then they will drink, and will become noisy like drunkards, full like the sacrificial basin or like the corners of the altar.
The LORD their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.16On that day the LORD their God will deliver them as the flock of his people, for they are the precious stones of a crown sparkling over his land.
How attractive and beautiful they will be! Grain will make the young men thrive, and new wine the young women.17How precious and fair! Grain will make the young men flourish and new wine the young women.
