| 1A psalm of David. I call to you, LORD, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. | 1O LORD, I am calling to you. Please hurry! Listen when I cry to you for help! |
| 2May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. | 2Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering. |
| 3Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. | 3Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips. |
| 4Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies. | 4Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do wrong. |
| 5Let a righteous man strike me--that is a kindness; let him rebuke me--that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it, for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers. | 5Let the godly strike me! It will be a kindness! If they correct me, it is soothing medicine. Don’t let me refuse it. But I pray constantly against the wicked and their deeds. |
| 6Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken. | 6When their leaders are thrown down from a cliff, the wicked will listen to my words and find them true. |
| 7They will say, "As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave." | 7Like rocks brought up by a plow, the bones of the wicked will lie scattered without burial. |
| 8But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge--do not give me over to death. | 8I look to you for help, O Sovereign LORD. You are my refuge; don’t let them kill me. |
| 9Keep me safe from the traps set by evildoers, from the snares they have laid for me. | 9Keep me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong. |
| 10Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety. | 10Let the wicked fall into their own nets, but let me escape. |
