What, my son? And what, son of my womb? And what, son of my vows?2O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,
Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.3Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which ruins kings.
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;4It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to crave strong drink,
Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.5lest they drink and forget what is decreed, and remove from all the poor their legal rights.
Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to those who are bitter of heart.6Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those who are bitterly distressed;
Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.7let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more.
Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die.8Open your mouth on behalf of those unable to speak, for the legal rights of all the dying.
Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy.9Open your mouth, judge in righteousness, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
