But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property.1But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property.
He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest.2However, he kept back part of the proceeds with his wife's knowledge, and brought a portion of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.
Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.3Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds from the field?
The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”4Wasn't it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn't it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God!"
As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.5When he heard these words, Ananias dropped dead, and a great fear came on all who heard.
Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him.6The young men got up, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him.
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.7There was an interval of about three hours; then his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. "
Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.”8Tell me," Peter asked her, "did you sell the field for this price?"" Yes," she said, "for that price."
And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”9Then Peter said to her, "Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!"
Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.10Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband.
Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened. The Apostles Heal Many11Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things.
The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade.12Many signs and wonders were being done among the people through the hands of the apostles. By common consent they would all meet in Solomon's Colonnade.
But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them.13None of the rest dared to join them, but the people praised them highly.
Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women.14Believers were added to the Lord in increasing numbers--crowds of both men and women.
As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by.15As a result, they would carry the sick out into the streets and lay them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. The Apostles Meet Opposition16In addition, a large group came together from the towns surrounding Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.17Then the high priest took action. He and all his colleagues, those who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.18So they arrested the apostles and put them in the city jail.
But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,19But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said,"
“Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!”20Go and stand in the temple complex, and tell the people all about this life."
So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council —the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.21In obedience to this, they entered the temple complex at daybreak and began to teach. When the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin--the full Senate of the sons of Israel--and sent orders to the jail to have them brought.
But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone. So they returned to the council and reported,22But when the temple police got there, they did not find them in the jail, so they returned and reported, "
“The jail was securely locked, with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the gates, no one was there!”23We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing in front of the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside!"
When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end.24As the commander of the temple police and the chief priests heard these things, they were baffled about them, as to what could come of this.
Then someone arrived with startling news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!”25Someone came and reported to them, "Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple complex and teaching the people."
The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them.26Then the commander went with the temple police and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.
Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.27After they brought them in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked, "
“We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”28Didn't we strictly order you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to bring this man's blood on us!"
But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.29But Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross.30The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had murdered by hanging Him on a tree.
Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.31God exalted this man to His right hand as ruler and Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.”32We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."
When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them.33When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while.34A Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered the men to be taken outside for a little while.
Then he said to his colleagues, “Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do to these men!35He said to them, "Men of Israel, be careful about what you're going to do to these men.
Some time ago there was that fellow Theudas, who pretended to be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but he was killed, and all his followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to nothing.36Not long ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about 400 men rallied to him. He was killed, and all his partisans were dispersed and came to nothing.
After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered.37After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and attracted a following. That man also perished, and all his partisans were scattered.
“So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.38And now, I tell you, stay away from these men and leave them alone. For if this plan or this work is of men, it will be overthrown;
But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!”39but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even be found fighting against God." So they were persuaded by him.
The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.40After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.
The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.41Then they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be dishonored on behalf of the Name.
And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.”42Every day in the temple complex, and in various homes, they continued teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
