New Living TranslationKing James Bible
Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.7For he that is dead is freed from sin.
And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God.10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.13Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right.20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
