David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army.1Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, even with every leader.
Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: “If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us.2David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is from the LORD our God, let us send everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they may meet with us;
It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul.”3and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."
The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do.4Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.5So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim.6David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the LORD who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called.
They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.7They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, even with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals and with trumpets.
But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark.9When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly upset it.
Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God.10The anger of the LORD burned against Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.
David was angry because the LORD’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today.11Then David became angry because of the LORD'S outburst against Uzza; and he called that place Perez-uzza to this day.
David was now afraid of God, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?”12David was afraid of God that day, saying, "How can I bring the ark of God home to me?"
So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.13So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned.14Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months; and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom with all that he had.
