1 I hope you will bear with a little of my foolishness, but you are already doing that. I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! Would to God ye could bear with me a little in <i>my</i> folly: and indeed bear with me. I wish that you would bear with me in a little foolishness; but indeed you are bearing with me. I hope you will put up with me in a little foolishness. Yes, please put up with me!
2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present <i>you as</i> a chaste virgin to Christ. For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, to present you <i>as</i> a pure virgin to Christ. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.
3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his trickery, your minds will be led astray from sincere and pure devotion to Christ. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or <i>if</i> ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with <i>him</i>. For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, <i>this</i> you tolerate <i>very</i> well! For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
5 I consider myself in no way inferior to those “super-apostles. Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. For I consider myself not in the least inferior to the most eminent apostles. I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”
6 Although I am not a polished speaker, I am certainly not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every way possible. Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things. But though <i>I be</i> rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things. But even if I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not <i>so</i> in knowledge; in fact, in every way we have made <i>this</i> evident to you in all things. I may indeed be untrained as a speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.
7 Was it a sin for me to humble myself in order to exalt you, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge? Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God’s gospel to you free of charge? Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? Or did I commit a sin by humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you without charge? Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge?
8 I robbed other churches by accepting their support in order to serve you. I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. I robbed other churches, taking wages <i>of them</i>, to do you service. I robbed other churches by taking wages <i>from them</i> to serve you; I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you.
9 And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to anyone; for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my needs. I have refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so. And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all <i>things</i> I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and <i>so</i> will I keep <i>myself</i>. and when I was present with you and was in need, I was not a burden to anyone; for when the brothers came from Macedonia they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from being a burden to you, and will continue to do so. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so.
10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia. As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of Achaia. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine.
11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth. Why? Because I do not love you? God knows <i>that I do!</i> Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!
12 But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things of which they boast. And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. But what I am doing I will also <i>continue to</i> do, so that I may eliminate the opportunity from those who want an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.
13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. For such <i>are</i> false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. Therefore <i>it is</i> no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do, then receive me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. I repeat, let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. Again I say, let no one think me foolish; but if <i>you do,</i> receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting.
17 In this confident boasting of mine, I am not speaking as the Lord would, but as a fool. What I am saying with this boastful confidence, I say not as the Lord would but as a fool. That which I speak, I speak <i>it</i> not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. What I am saying, I am not saying as the Lord would, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool.
18 Since many are boasting according to the flesh, I too will boast. Since many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also. Since many boast according to the flesh, I will boast also. Since many are boasting in the way the world does, I too will boast.
19 For you gladly tolerate fools, since you are so wise. For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye <i>yourselves</i> are wise. For you, being <i>so</i> wise, tolerate the foolish gladly. You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise!
20 In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or exalts himself or strikes you in the face. For you bear it if someone makes slaves of you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face. For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour <i>you</i>, if a man take <i>of you</i>, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face. For you tolerate it if anyone enslaves you, if anyone devours you, if anyone takes <i>advantage of</i> you, if anyone exalts himself, if anyone hits you in the face. In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face.
21 To my shame I concede that we were too weak for that! Speaking as a fool, however, I can match what anyone else dares to boast about. To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that! But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also. To <i>my</i> shame I <i>must</i> say that we have been weak <i>by comparison.</i> But in whatever respect anyone <i>else</i> is bold—I am speaking in foolishness—I too am bold. To my shame I admit that we were too weak for that! Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.
22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. Are they Hebrews? so <i>am</i> I. Are they Israelites? so <i>am</i> I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so <i>am</i> I. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking like I am out of my mind, but I am so much more: in harder labor, in more imprisonments, in worse beatings, in frequent danger of death. Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I <i>am</i> more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Are they servants of Christ?—I am speaking as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in <i>danger of</i> death. Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.
24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Of the Jews five times received I forty <i>stripes</i> save one. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine <i>lashes.</i> Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. 26 In my frequent journeys, I have been in danger from rivers and from bandits, in danger from my countrymen and from the Gentiles, in danger in the city and in the country, in danger on the sea and among false brothers, on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; <i>In</i> journeyings often, <i>in</i> perils of waters, <i>in</i> perils of robbers, <i>in</i> perils by <i>mine own</i> countrymen, <i>in</i> perils by the heathen, <i>in</i> perils in the city, <i>in</i> perils in the wilderness, <i>in</i> perils in the sea, <i>in</i> perils among false brethren; <i>I have been</i> on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from <i>my</i> countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers; I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.
27 in labor and toil and often without sleep, in hunger and thirst and often without food, in cold and exposure. in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. <i>I have been</i> in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 Apart from these external trials, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.
29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not burn with grief? Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant? Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern? Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is forever worthy of praise, knows that I am not lying. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying.
