1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying: In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: In the seventh <i>month</i>, in the one and twentieth <i>day</i> of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying, On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2 “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and also to the remnant of the people. Ask them, “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying, “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
3 ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’ ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Who <i>is</i> left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? <i>is it</i> not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? ‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison? Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?
4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I <i>am</i> with you, saith the LORD of hosts: But now take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ declares the LORD of armies. But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
5 This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.” according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. <i>According to</i> the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. ‘As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit remains in your midst; do not fear!’ This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it <i>is</i> a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry <i>land</i>; For this is what the LORD of armies says: ‘Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7 I will shake all the nations, and they will come with all their treasures, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Hosts. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. I will shake all the nations; and they will come <i>with</i> the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD of armies. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty.
8 The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. The silver <i>is</i> mine, and the gold <i>is</i> mine, saith the LORD of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,’ declares the LORD of armies. The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
9 The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.” The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’” The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts. ‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the LORD of armies, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the LORD of armies.” The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying, On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, In the four and twentieth <i>day</i> of the ninth <i>month</i>, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, On the twenty-fourth of the ninth <i>month,</i> in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying, On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
11 “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask the priests for a ruling. “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests <i>concerning</i> the law, saying, “The LORD of armies says this: ‘Now ask the priests <i>for</i> a ruling: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
12 If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that item become holy?’ ” “No,” replied the priests. ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, “No.” If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or <i>touches</i> cooked food, wine, oil, or any <i>other</i> food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.” If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’” The priests answered, “No.”
13 So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?” “Yes, it becomes defiled,” the priests answered. Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” Then said Haggai, If <i>one that is</i> unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these <i>things,</i> will <i>the latter</i> become unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will become unclean.” Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?” “Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.”
14 Then Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is defiled. Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. Then answered Haggai, and said, So <i>is</i> this people, and so <i>is</i> this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so <i>is</i> every work of their hands; and that which they offer there <i>is</i> unclean. Then Haggai responded and said, “‘So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. Then Haggai said, “’So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the LORD. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
15 Now consider carefully from this day forward: Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD, Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD: But now, do consider from this day onward: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD, “’Now give careful thought to this from this day on —consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD’s temple.
16 from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain, there were but ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths, there were but twenty. how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. Since those <i>days</i> were, when <i>one</i> came to an heap of twenty <i>measures</i>, there were <i>but</i> ten: when <i>one</i> came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty <i>vessels</i> out of the press, there were <i>but</i> twenty. from that time <i>when</i> one came to a grain heap of twenty <i>measures,</i> there would be <i>only</i> ten; <i>and when</i> one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there would be <i>only</i> twenty. When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
17 I struck you— all the work of your hands— with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD. I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye <i>turned</i> not to me, saith the LORD. I struck you <i>and</i> every work of your hands with scorching wind, mildew, and hail; yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares the LORD. I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,’ declares the LORD.
18 Consider carefully from this day forward— from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid— consider carefully: Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider: Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth <i>month, even</i> from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider <i>it</i>. ‘Do consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth <i>month;</i> from the day when the temple of the LORD was founded, consider: From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. Give careful thought:
19 Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.” Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.” Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless <i>you</i>. Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree, it has not produced <i>fruit. Yet</i> from this day <i>on</i> I will bless <i>you.</i>’” Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “’From this day on I will bless you.’”
20 For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to Haggai, saying, The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth <i>day</i> of the month, saying, Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth <i>day</i> of the month, saying, The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21 “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth: “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; “Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, ‘I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22 I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother. and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. And I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, every one by the sword of another.’ I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.” On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.” In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts. ‘On that day,’ declares the LORD of armies, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,’” declares the LORD of armies. “’On that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
