1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as on previous occasions, but he turned his face toward the wilderness. When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as at other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness. And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times to seek omens, rather he turned his attention toward the wilderness. Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to divination as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.
2 When Balaam looked up and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him, And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him, And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding <i>in his tents</i> according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. And Balaam raised his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him. When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him
3 and he lifted up an oracle, saying: “This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open, and he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened, And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: Then he took up his discourse and said, “The declaration of Balaam the son of Beor, And the declaration of the man whose eye is opened; and he spoke his message: “The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open: the oracle of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down with his eyes uncovered: He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling <i>into a trance</i>, but having his eyes open: The declaration of him who hears the words of God, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Falling down, yet having his eyes uncovered, the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
5 How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel! How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your encampments, O Israel! How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, <i>and</i> thy tabernacles, O Israel! How pleasant are your tents, Jacob, Your dwelling places, Israel! “How beautiful are your tents, Jacob, your dwelling places, Israel!
6 They spread out like palm groves, like gardens beside a stream, like aloes the LORD has planted, like cedars beside the waters. Like palm groves that stretch afar, like gardens beside a river, like aloes that the LORD has planted, like cedar trees beside the waters. As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, <i>and</i> as cedar trees beside the waters. “Like valleys that stretch out, Like gardens beside a river, Like aloes planted by the LORD, Like cedars beside the waters. “Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters.
7 Water will flow from his buckets, and his seed will have abundant water. His king will be greater than Agag, and his kingdom will be exalted. Water shall flow from his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters; his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed <i>shall be</i> in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. “Water will flow from his buckets, And his seed <i>will be</i> by many waters, And his king shall be higher than Agag, And his kingdom shall be exalted. Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water. “Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted.
8 God brought him out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox, to devour hostile nations and crush their bones, to pierce them with arrows. God brings him out of Egypt and is for him like the horns of the wild ox; he shall eat up the nations, his adversaries, and shall break their bones in pieces and pierce them through with his arrows. God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce <i>them</i> through with his arrows. “God brings him out of Egypt, <i>He is</i> for him like the horns of the wild ox. He will devour the nations <i>who are</i> his adversaries, And will crush their bones, And smash <i>them</i> with his arrows. “God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox. 9 He crouches, he lies down like a lion; like a lioness, who dares to rouse him? Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those who curse you.” He crouched, he lay down like a lion and like a lioness; who will rouse him up? Blessed are those who bless you, and cursed are those who curse you.” He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed <i>is</i> he that blesseth thee, and cursed <i>is</i> he that curseth thee. “He crouches, he lies down like a lion, And like a lioness, who dares to rouse him? Blessed is <i>everyone</i> who blesses you, And cursed is <i>everyone</i> who curses you.” Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse them? “May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!”
10 Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together and said to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but behold, you have persisted in blessing them these three times. And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. And Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times. And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed <i>them</i> these three times. Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, but behold, you have persisted in blessing them these three times! Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times.
11 Therefore, flee at once to your home! I said I would richly reward you, but instead the LORD has denied your reward.” Therefore now flee to your own place. I said, ‘I will certainly honor you,’ but the LORD has held you back from honor.” Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour. So flee to your place now. I said I would honor you greatly, but behold, the LORD has held you back from honor.” Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the LORD has kept you from being rewarded.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not already tell the messengers you sent me And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not in fact tell your messengers whom you had sent to me, saying, Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,
13 that even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD? I will speak whatever the LORD says. ‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will. What the LORD speaks, that will I speak’? If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do <i>either</i> good or bad of mine own mind; <i>but</i> what the LORD saith, that will I speak? ‘If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do <i>anything</i> contrary to the command of the LORD, either good or bad, of my own accord. What the LORD speaks, I will speak’? Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD—and I must say only what the LORD says’?
14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.” And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, I will let you know what this people will do to your people in the latter days.” And now, behold, I go unto my people: come <i>therefore, and</i> I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days. So now, behold, I am going to my people; come, <i>and</i> I will advise you of what this people will do to your people in the days to come.” Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”
15 Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying, “This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open, And he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened, And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: Then he took up his discourse and said, “The declaration of Balaam the son of Beor, And the declaration of the man whose eye is opened, Then he spoke his message: “The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open: the oracle of him who hears the words of God, and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down with his eyes uncovered: He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, <i>which</i> saw the vision of the Almighty, falling <i>into a trance</i>, but having his eyes open: The declaration of him who hears the words of God, And knows the knowledge of the Most High, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Falling down, yet having his eyes uncovered: the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come forth from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will crush the skulls of Moab and strike down all the sons of Sheth. I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth. I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. I see him, but not now; I look at him, but not near; A star shall appear from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall smash the forehead of Moab, And overcome all the sons of Sheth. “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.
18 Edom will become a possession, as will Seir, his enemy; but Israel will perform with valor. Edom shall be dispossessed; Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed. Israel is doing valiantly. And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. “And Edom shall be a possession, Seir, its enemies, also will be a possession, While Israel performs valiantly. Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.” And one from Jacob shall exercise dominion and destroy the survivors of cities!” Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city. “One from Jacob shall rule, And will eliminate the survivors from the city.” A ruler will come out of Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Amalek was first among the nations, but his end is destruction.” Then he looked on Amalek and took up his discourse and said, “Amalek was the first among the nations, but its end is utter destruction.” And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek <i>was</i> the first of the nations; but his latter end <i>shall be</i> that he perish for ever. And he looked at Amalek and took up his discourse and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations, But his end <i>shall be</i> destruction.” Then Balaam saw Amalek and spoke his message: “Amalek was first among the nations, but their end will be utter destruction.”
21 Next he saw the Kenites and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Your dwelling place is secure, and your nest is set in a cliff. And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said, “Enduring is your dwelling place, and your nest is set in the rock. And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock. And he looked at the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said, “Your dwelling place is enduring, And your nest is set in the cliff. Then he saw the Kenites and spoke his message: “Your dwelling place is secure, your nest is set in a rock;
22 Yet Kain will be destroyed when Asshur takes you captive.” Nevertheless, Kain shall be burned when Asshur takes you away captive.” Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive. “Nevertheless Kain will suffer devastation; How long will Asshur keep you captive?” yet you Kenites will be destroyed when Ashur takes you captive.”
23 Once more Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Ah, who can live unless God has ordained it? And he took up his discourse and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this? And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! Then he took up his discourse and said, “Oh, who can live unless God has ordained it? Then he spoke his message: “Alas! Who can live when God does this?
24 Ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus; they will subdue Asshur and Eber, but they too will perish forever.” But ships shall come from Kittim and shall afflict Asshur and Eber; and he too shall come to utter destruction.” And ships <i>shall come</i> from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever. “But ships <i>shall come</i> from the coast of Kittim, And they shall oppress Asshur and oppress Eber; So they also <i>will come</i> to destruction.” Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus; they will subdue Ashur and Eber, but they too will come to ruin.”
25 Then Balaam arose and returned to his homeland, and Balak also went on his way. Then Balaam rose and went back to his place. And Balak also went his way. And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way. Then Balaam arose, and he departed and returned to his place, and Balak also went on his way. Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
