Then Elijah said to the people,

Elijah, whose name means “My God is Yahweh,” stood before Israel as the Lord’s messenger during Ahab’s reign, when royal power had been used to establish Baal worship throughout the northern kingdom. His words prepared the assembled nation for a public decision between the covenant God of Israel and the gods embraced under Jezebel’s influence. Mount Carmel became the setting where the Lord exposed idolatry and called His people to return to Him.

Elijah spoke from the lonely position of a faithful servant surrounded by apostasy. Jezebel had murdered many prophets of the Lord, while Obadiah had hidden one hundred others in caves and supplied them with food and water (1 Kings 18:4). Elijah was not literally the last prophet alive, but he alone stood publicly before Ahab, the people, and the prophets of Baal. His later despair would be answered by God’s assurance that seven thousand in Israel had not bowed to Baal (1 Kings 19:18). The Lord preserves His servants even when faithfulness appears nearly extinguished.

Baal worship enjoyed official support, numerous representatives, and the favor of the royal court. The overwhelming numerical imbalance made clear that the coming contest would not be won by human strength or popular approval. Baal, believed to control rain, storms, and fertility, would be challenged during the drought the Lord had sent upon Israel. The Lord’s answer by fire would reveal that He alone rules creation and that every false god is powerless before Him.
