He will stand and shepherd His flock

The ruler promised from Bethlehem will actively reign over God’s people with steadfast authority and tender care. Like David, who was taken from the sheepfolds to shepherd Israel, the Messiah will guard, guide, feed, and defend His flock. Jesus identified Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11), fulfilling the shepherd-king hope also declared in Ezekiel 34:23.

And they will dwell securely,

Under the Messiah’s shepherding care, God’s people will know safety and settled peace. Israel’s history of invasion, exile, and oppression makes this promise especially significant. The final fulfillment awaits Christ’s visible kingdom, when He will remove oppression and establish enduring peace.

The King born in Bethlehem will not remain a local ruler over Israel alone.
