Only do not rebel against the LORD,

Caleb and Joshua warned Israel not to reject the God who had delivered them from Egypt, sustained them in the wilderness, and promised them Canaan. Refusing to enter the land would be more than military caution; it would be covenant rebellion and unbelief in God’s word.

and do not be afraid of the people of the land,

The fortified cities and powerful inhabitants had overwhelmed the faith of the other spies and much of the congregation. Israel was called to remember the LORD’s power rather than measure the future by human strength. God later gave Joshua the same charge to be strong and courageous as Israel entered the land.

Deu 1:29-30 So I said to you: “Do not be terrified or afraid of them!…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…

for they will be like bread for us.

The Canaanites would become Israel’s provision rather than Israel’s destroyers, because the LORD had promised victory. As God had fed His people with manna in the wilderness, He would also supply what they needed through the conquest of the land.

Their protection has been removed,

Canaan’s false gods, military strength, and fortified cities could not preserve a people marked for judgment. God had delayed judgment upon the Amorites for generations, but the time had come for Him to give the land to Abraham’s descendants and judge the land’s entrenched wickedness.

and the LORD is with us.

The LORD’s presence among Israel was visibly displayed in the cloud, the fire, and the tabernacle. His presence, not Israel’s numbers or skill, assured their success. God’s dwelling with His people finds its fullest fulfillment in Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, “God with us.”.

Do not be afraid of them!”

Fear would lead Israel away from obedience and deprive that generation of entering the promised inheritance. Faith does not deny danger; it trusts the LORD who rules over every enemy and keeps His promises.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The Israelites
The people of God who were delivered from Egypt and are now on the brink of entering the Promised Land.

2. Joshua and Caleb
Two of the twelve spies sent to scout the land of Canaan. They are the only ones who trust in God's promise and encourage the Israelites to take possession of the land.

3. The Promised Land (Canaan)
The land promised by God to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It represents God's faithfulness and provision.

4. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant-keeping God of Israel, who has promised to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites.

Teaching Points
Trust in God's Promises

Rebellion Against God
