David’s settled longing is not for power, victory, or comfort, though he faces real danger throughout the psalm. A life ordered by desire for God finds its proper priorities and receives every lesser gift as secondary.

David longs for continual fellowship with God in the place appointed for worship. During his reign, the ark of the covenant stood in a tent in Jerusalem until Solomon built the temple, yet the sanctuary already represented the LORD’s gracious presence among His people. The request reaches beyond physical residence to a lifelong life of worship, dependence, and communion with God.
