Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,1Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."2“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.”
He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?3He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.'4For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,"5But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”
he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.6he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said, 7You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, 8“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" 9in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.10And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand:
What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person."11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?"12Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”
And he replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.13He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.
Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit."14Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us."15But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.”
Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish?16And he said, “Are you also still without understanding?
Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.18But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person." 20These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.
A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!"22And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”
But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, "Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us."23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”
So he answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But she came and bowed down before him and said, "Lord, help me!"25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
"It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs," he said.26And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed from that hour. 28Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down.29Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there.
Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them.30And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them,
As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel. 31so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way."32Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”
The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?"33And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?”
Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven--and a few small fish."34And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground,35And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground,
he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds.36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.37And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
Not counting children and women, there were four thousand men who ate.38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. 39And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
