The Descendants of David
(2 Samuel 3:1–5)

1These were the sons of David (beloved) who were born to him in Hebron (association):

The firstborn was Amnon (faithful) by Ahinoam (my brother is delight) of Jezreel;

the second was Daniel (God is my judge) by Abigail (my father is joy) of Carmel;

2the third was Absalom (my father is peace) the son of Maacah (oppression) daughter of King Talmai (furrowed) of Geshur (proud beholder);

the fourth was Adonijah (my lord is YHWH) the son of Haggith (festive);

3the fifth was Shephatiah (YHWH has judged) by Abital (my father is the dew);

and the sixth was Ithream (profit of the people) by his wife Eglah (a heifer).

4These six sons were born to David in Hebron (association), where he reigned seven years and six months.

And David reigned in Jerusalem (city of peace) thirty-three years, 5and these sons were born to him in Jerusalem (city of peace):

Shimea (Shammua),a Shobab (rebellious), Nathan (giver), and Solomon (peace). These four were born to him by Bathsheba [Bath-shua]b daughter of Ammiel (Eliam).c

6David’s other sons were Ibhar,d Elishua [Elishama],e Eliphelet (God is deliverance), 7Nogah (brightness), Nepheg (sprout), Japhia (shining), 8Elishama (my God has heard), Eliada (God knows), and Eliphelet (God is deliverance)—nine in all.

9These were all the sons of David (beloved), besides the sons by his concubines. And Tamar (palm-tree) was their sister.

The Descendants of Solomon

10Solomon’s (peace) son was Rehoboam (a people has enlarged):

Abijah was (YHWH is my father) his son, Asa (healer) his son, Jehoshaphat (YHWH has judged) his son, 11Joram (Jehoram)f his son, Ahaziah (YHWH holds) his son, Joash (given by the Lord) his son, 12Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) his son, Azariah (Uzziah)g his son, Jotham (YHWH is perfect) his son, 13Ahaz (he has grasped) his son, Hezekiah (YHWH is my strength) his son, Manasseh (causing to forget) his son, 14Amon (skilled workman) his son, and Josiah (whom YHWH heals) his son.

15The sons of Josiah (whom YHWH heals):

Johanan (YHWH has graced) was the firstborn, Jehoiakim (YHWH raises up) the second, Zedekiah (YHWH is righteous) the third, and Shallum (Jehoahaz)h the fourth.

16The successors of Jehoiakim (YHWH raises up):

Jeconiah (Jehoiachin)i his son, and Zedekiah (YHWH is righteous).

The Royal Line After the Exile

17The descendants of Jeconiah (YHWH will establish) the captive:

Shealtiel (I have asked of God) his son, 18Malchiram (my king is high), Pedaiah (YHWH has ransomed), Shenazzar (splendid leader), Jekamiah (YHWH raises), Hoshama (whom YHWH hears), and Nedabiah (whom YHWH impels).

19The sons of Pedaiah (YHWH has ransomed):

Zerubbabel (sown in Babylon) and Shimei (renowned).

The children of Zerubbabel:

Meshullam (friend) and Hananiah (God has favored), their sister Shelomith (peaceful), 20and five others: Hashubah (consideration), Ohel (tent), Berechiah (YHWH blesses), Hasadiah (YHWH has been faithful), and Jushab-hesed (whose love is returned).

21The descendants of Hananiah (God has favored):

Pelatiah (YHWH delivers), Jeshaiah (YHWH has saved), and the sons of Rephaiah (healed of YHWH), of Arnan (lion of perpetuity), of Obadiah (servant of YHWH), and of Shecaniah (dweller with YHWH).

22The six descendants of Shecaniah (dweller with YHWH) were Shemaiah (heard by YHWH) and his sons:

Hattush (assembled), Igal (He redeems), Bariah (fugitive), Neariah (servant of YHWH), and Shaphat (He has judged).

23The sons of Neariah (servant of YHWH):

Elioenai (unto YHWH are my eyes), Hizkiah (YHWH is my strength), and Azrikam (help against the enemy)—three in all.

24The sons of Elioenai (unto YHWH are my eyes):

Hodaviah (praise YHWH), Eliashib (God restores), Pelaiah (YHWH does wonders), Akkub (insidious), Johanan (YHWH has graced), Delaiah (YHWH has drawn), and Anani (my cloud)—seven in all.
