2 Kings 14

Amaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 25:1–4)

1In the second year of the reign of Jehoash \Joash/a son of Jehoahaz (YHWH has grasped) over Israel (he wrestles with God), Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) son of Joash (given by the Lord) became king of Judah (praised). 2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem (city of peace) twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan (YHWH delights); she was from Jerusalem. 3And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH}, but not as his father David had done (beloved). He did everything as his father Joash (given by the Lord) had done.

4Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away, and the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.

5As soon as the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king. 6Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses (drawn out), where the LORD {YHWH} commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin <Deu 24:16>.”b

7Amaziah struck down 10,000 Edomites (red) in the Valley of Salt. He took Sela (the rock) in battle and called it Joktheel (the blessedness of God), which is its name to this very day.

Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
(2 Chronicles 25:17–24)

8Then Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) sent messengers to the king of Israel (he wrestles with God) Jehoash (given by the Lord) son of Jehoahaz (YHWH has seized), the son of Jehu (YHWH is He). “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.

9But Jehoash (given by the Lord) king of Israel (he wrestles with God) replied to Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) king of Judah (praised): “A thistle in Lebanon (whiteness) sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle. 10You have indeed defeated Edom (red), and your heart has become proud. Glory in that and stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah (praised) with you?”

11But Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) would not listen, so Jehoash (given by the Lord) king of Israel (he wrestles with God) advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah (praised) faced each other at Beth-shemesh (house of the sun) in Judah. 12And Judah (praised) was routed before Israel (he wrestles with God), and every man fled to his home.

13There at Beth-shemesh (house of the sun), Jehoash (given by the Lord) king of Israel (he wrestles with God) captured Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) king of Judah (praised), the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah (YHWH holds).

Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem (city of peace) and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim (doubly fruitful) Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits <600 ft / 182.9 m>.c 14He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD {YHWH} and in the treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he returned to Samaria (watch mountain).

Jeroboam II Succeeds Jehoash in Israel

15As for the rest of the acts of Jehoash (given by the Lord), along with his accomplishments, his might, and how he waged war against Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) king of Judah (praised), are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel (he wrestles with God)?

16And Jehoash (given by the Lord) rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria (watch mountain) with the kings of Israel (he wrestles with God). And his son Jeroboam (the people will contend) reigned in his place.

The Death of Amaziah
(2 Chronicles 25:25–28)

17Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) son of Joash (given by the Lord) king of Judah (praised) lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz (YHWH has seized) king of Israel (he wrestles with God). 18As for the rest of the acts of Amaziah (YHWH is mighty), are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah (praised)?

19And conspirators plotted against Amaziah in Jerusalem (city of peace), and he fled to Lachish (invincible). But men were sent after him to Lachish, and they killed him there. 20They carried him back on horses and buried him in Jerusalem (city of peace) with his fathers in the City of David (beloved).

Azariah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah
(2 Chronicles 26:1–2)

21Then all the people of Judah (praised) took Azariah (Uzziah),d who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah (YHWH is mighty). 22Azariah was the one who rebuilt Elath (Eloth)e and restored it to Judah (praised) after King Amaziah rested with his fathers.

Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel

23In the fifteenth year of the reign of Amaziah (YHWH is mighty) son of Joash (given by the Lord) over Judah (praised), Jeroboam (the people will contend) son of Jehoash became king of Israel (he wrestles with God), and he reigned in Samaria (watch mountain) forty-one years. 24And he did evil in the sight of the LORD {YHWH} and did not turn away from all the sins that Jeroboam (the people will contend) son of Nebat (aspect) had caused Israel (he wrestles with God) to commit.

25This Jeroboam restored the boundary of Israel (he wrestles with God) from Lebo-hamath (fortress) to the Sea of the Arabah (the Dead Sea),f according to the word that the LORD, the God {YHWH Elohe} of Israel, had spoken through His servant Jonah (dove) son of Amittai (my truth), the prophet from Gath-hepher (the winepress of digging). 26For the LORD {YHWH} saw that the affliction of the Israelites (God prevails), both slave and free, was very bitter. There was no one to help Israel, 27and since the LORD {YHWH} had said that He would not blot out the name of Israel (he wrestles with God) from under heaven, He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam (the people will contend) son of Jehoash (given by the Lord).

28As for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam (the people will contend), along with all his accomplishments and might, and how he waged war and recovered both Damascus (well-watered land) and Hamath (fortress) for Israel (he wrestles with God) from Judah (praised), are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

29And Jeroboam (the people will contend) rested with his fathers [and he was buried in Samaria with],g the kings of Israel (he wrestles with God). And his son Zechariah (YHWH remembers) reigned in his place.
