Genesis 36

The Descendants of Esau
(1 Chronicles 1:35–37)

1This is the account of Esau (hairy) (that is, Edom (red)). 2Esau (hairy) took his wives from the daughters of Canaan (lowland): Adah (ornament) daughter of Elon (mighty) the Hittite, Oholibamah (tent of the high place) daughter of Anah (answer) and granddaughter of Zibeon (dyed) the Hivite (villagers), 3and Basemath (spice) daughter of Ishmael (God hears) and sister of Nebaioth (heights). 4And Adah (ornament) bore Eliphaz (my God is gold) to Esau (hairy), Basemath (spice) gave birth to Reuel (friend of God), 5and Oholibamah (tent of the high place) gave birth to Jeush (assembler), Jalam (concealed), and Korah (bald). These were the sons of Esau (hairy), who were born to him in the land of Canaan (lowland).

6Later, Esau (hairy) took his wives and sons and daughters and all the people of his household, along with his livestock, all his other animals, and all the property he had acquired in Canaan (lowland), and he moved to a land far away from his brother Jacob (he grasps the heel). 7For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together; the land where they stayed could not support them because of their livestock. 8So Esau (hairy) (that is, Edom (red)) settled in the area of Mount Seir (shaggy).

9This is the account of Esau (hairy), the father of the Edomites (red), in the area of Mount Seir (shaggy).

10These are the names of Esau’s (hairy) sons: Eliphaz (my God is gold) son of Esau’s wife Adah (ornament), and Reuel (friend of God) son of Esau’s wife Basemath (spice).

11The sons of Eliphaz (my God is gold) were Teman (south), Omar (speaker / eloquent), Zepho (watch-tower), Gatam (a burnt valley), and Kenaz (hunter). 12Additionally, Timna (restrained), a concubine of Esau’s (hairy) son Eliphaz (my God is gold), gave birth to Amalek (dweller in a valley). These are the grandsons of Esau’s wife Adah (ornament).

13These are the sons of Reuel (friend of God): Nahath (rest), Zerah (rising), Shammah (astonishment), and Mizzah (fear). They are the grandsons of Esau’s (hairy) wife Basemath (spice).

14These are the sons of Esau’s (hairy) wife Oholibamah (tent of the high place) (daughter of Anah (answer) and granddaughter of Zibeon (dyed)) whom she bore to Esau: Jeush (assembler), Jalam (concealed), and Korah (bald).

15These are the chiefs among the sons of Esau (hairy). The sons of Eliphaz (my God is gold) the firstborn of Esau: Chiefs Teman (south), Omar (speaker / eloquent), Zepho (watch-tower), Kenaz (hunter), 16Korah,a Gatam (a burnt valley), and Amalek (dweller in a valley). They are the chiefs of Eliphaz (my God is gold) in the land of Edom (red), and they are the grandsons of Adah (ornament).

17These are the sons of Esau’s (hairy) son Reuel (friend of God): Chiefs Nahath (rest), Zerah (rising), Shammah (astonishment), and Mizzah (fear). They are the chiefs descended from Reuel in the land of Edom (red), and they are the grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath (spice).

18These are the sons of Esau’s (hairy) wife Oholibamah (tent of the high place): Chiefs Jeush (He hurries to aid), Jalam (concealed), and Korah (bald). They are the chiefs descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah (answer).

19All these are the sons of Esau (hairy) (that is, Edom (red)), and they were their chiefs.

The Descendants of Seir
(1 Chronicles 1:38–42)

20These are the sons of Seir (shaggy) the Horite (cave dweller), who were living in the land: Lotan (covering), Shobal (flowing), Zibeon (dyed), Anah (answer), 21Dishon (thresher), Ezer (treasure), and Dishan. They are the chiefs of the Horites (cave dweller), the descendants of Seir (shaggy) in the land of Edom (red).

22The sons of Lotan (covering) were Hori (cave dweller) and Hemam (Homam).b Timna (restrained) was Lotan’s sister.

23These are the sons of Shobal (flowing): Alvan (tall), Manahath (rest), Ebal (stone), Shepho (bold), and Onam (vigorous).

24These are the sons of Zibeon (dyed): Aiah (falcon) and Anah (answer). (This is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness as he was pasturing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.)

25These are the children of Anah (answer): Dishon (thresher) and Oholibamah (tent of the high place) daughter of Anah.

26These are the sons of Dishon {Dishan}:c Hemdan (desire), Eshban (fire of discernment), Ithran (advantage), and Cheran (lyre).

27These are the sons of Ezer (treasure): Bilhan (their decrepitude), Zaavan (troubled), and Akan (sharp-sighted).

28These are the sons of Dishan (thresher): Uz (wooded) and Aran (joyous).

29These are the chiefs of the Horites (cave dweller): Chiefs Lotan (covering), Shobal (flowing), Zibeon (dyed), Anah (answer), 30Dishon (thresher), Ezer (treasure), and Dishan. They are the chiefs of the Horites (cave dweller), according to their divisions in the land of Seir (shaggy).

The Kings of Edom
(1 Chronicles 1:43–54)

31These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom (red) before any king reigned over the Israelites (before an Israelite king reigned over them:):d

32Bela (destruction) son of Beor (burning) reigned in Edom (red); the name of his city was Dinhabah (give judgement).

33When Bela (destruction) died, Jobab (a desert) son of Zerah (rising) from Bozrah (sheepfold / fortress) reigned in his place.

34When Jobab (a desert) died, Husham (haste) from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.

35When Husham (haste) died, Hadad (mighty) son of Bedad (solitary), who defeated Midian (strife) in the country of Moab (of his father), reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith (ruins).

36When Hadad (mighty) died, Samlah (garment) from Masrekah (vineyard of noble vines) reigned in his place.

37When Samlah (garment) died, Shaul (desired) from Rehoboth (broad places) on the Euphrates \the River/e reigned in his place.

38When Shaul (desired) died, Baal-hanan (Baal is gracious) son of Achbor (mouse) reigned in his place.

39When Baal-hanan (Baal is gracious) son of Achbor (mouse) died, Hadad [Hadar]f reigned in his place. His city was named Pau (bleating), and his wife’s name was Mehetabel (favored of God) daughter of Matred (pushing forward), the daughter of Me-zahab (waters of gold).

40These are the names of Esau’s (hairy) chiefs, according to their families and regions, by their names: Chiefs Timna (restrained), Alvah (evil), Jetheth (a nail), 41Oholibamah (tent of the high place), Elah (An oak), Pinon (darkness), 42Kenaz (hunter), Teman (south), Mibzar (fortress), 43Magdiel (prince of God), and Iram (belonging to a city). These were the chiefs of Edom (red), according to their settlements in the land they possessed. Esau (hairy) was the father of the Edomites.
