An ass - Literally, "the ass," which, according to Hebrew idiom, means that he set them upon asses. This is the first notice of other sons besides Gershom.
The rod of God - The staff of Moses was consecrated by the miracle Exodus 4:2 and became "the rod of God."

"At this remark, MOSES FLED AND BECAME AN ALIEN IN THE LAND OF MIDIAN, where he became the father of two sons.
Then she gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, "I have been a sojourner in a foreign land."
The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" And he said, "A staff."
"You shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall perform the signs."
"As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry land.
So Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."
