The marginal reading is better. On the Nethinims see 1 Chronicles 9:2 note.
Ophel was the slope south of the temple (see the marginal reference "y" note); and the water-gate, a gate in the eastern wall, either for the escape of the superfluous water from the temple reservoirs, or for the introduction of water from the Kidron valley when the reservoirs were low.

The temple servants: the sons of Ziha, the sons of Hasupha, the sons of Tabbaoth,
And all the people gathered as one man at the square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel.
But the temple servants were living in Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants.
At the Fountain Gate they went directly up the steps of the city of David by the stairway of the wall above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
