Pilate then went out - This was an act of condescension; but, as the Romans had confirmed to the Jews the free use of all their rites and ceremonies, the governor could not do less than comply with them in this matter. He went out to them, that they might not be obliged to come into the hall, and thus run the risk of being defiled.

Peter's Denial and Repentance.
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied.
"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "You have said so," Jesus replied.
And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king."
So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "You have said so," Jesus replied.
"If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
