From my deadly enemies, who compass me about - This is a metaphor taken from huntsmen, who spread themselves around a large track of forest, driving in the deer from every part of the circumference, till they are forced into the nets or traps which they have set for them in some particular narrow passage. The metaphor is carried on in the following verses.

Saul was going along one side of the mountain, and David and his men were on the other side, hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his forces were closing in on David and his men to capture them,
Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.
In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?"
because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.
Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
