Years later, when Joshua led our ancestors in battle against the nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was taken with them into their new territory. And it stayed there until the time of King David.

7:45 Which our fathers having received - From their ancestors; brought into the possession of the Gentiles - Into the land which the Gentiles possessed before. So that God's favour is not a necessary consequence of inhabiting this land. All along St. Stephen intimates two things:

So the people left their camp to cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them.
Now that the land was under Israelite control, the entire community of Israel gathered at Shiloh and set up the Tabernacle.
"For the LORD has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you.
It was the LORD who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the LORD, for he alone is our God."
You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free.
You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land.
