The Fifth Commandment
Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!" And with those words he breathed his last.
As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return."
But Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground. "O God," they pleaded, "you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Must you be angry with all the people when only one man sins?"
"O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.
If God were to take back his spirit and withdraw his breath,
all life would cease, and humanity would turn again to dust.
