CommentaryWesley's Notes on the Bible
14:19 The angel of God - Whose ministry was made use of in the pillar of cloud and fire, went from before the camp of Israel, where they did not now need a guide; there was no danger of missing their way through the sea, and came behind them, where now they needed a guard, the Egyptians being just ready to seize the hindmost of them. There it was of use to the Israelites, not only to protect them, but to light them through the sea; and at the same time it confounded the Egyptians, so that they lost sight of their prey, just when they were ready to lay hands on it. And the LORD did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.
The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.
"See, I am sending an angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you.
But when we cried out to the LORD, he heard us and sent an angel who brought us out of Egypt. Now we are camped at Kadesh, a town on the border of your land.
You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
He kept them safe so they were not afraid; but the sea covered their enemies.
