You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected--even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
"Pay close attention to all my instructions. You must not call on the name of any other gods. Do not even speak their names.
"Make no treaties with them or their gods.
They must not live in your land, or they will cause you to sin against me. If you serve their gods, you will be caught in the trap of idolatry."
Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles.
"Do not make idols or set up carved images, or sacred pillars, or sculptured stones in your land so you may worship them. I am the LORD your God.
