But when the judge died, the people returned to their corrupt ways, behaving worse than those who had lived before them. They went after other gods, serving and worshiping them. And they refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful--even worse than their ancestors.
And you are even worse than your ancestors! You stubbornly follow your own evil desires and refuse to listen to me.
"Son of man," he said, "I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day.
I let them pollute themselves with the very gifts I had given them, and I allowed them to give their firstborn children as offerings to their gods--so I might devastate them and remind them that I alone am the LORD.
I said to them, 'What is this high place where you are going?' (This kind of pagan shrine has been called Bamah--'high place'--ever since.)
