If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.
But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with such scum?"
But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, "Why does he eat with such scum?"
This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people--even eating with them!
So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue forcefully. "We see nothing wrong with him," they shouted. "Perhaps a spirit or an angel spoke to him."
