New Living Translation
Clearly, God's promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God's law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.
King James Bible
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Darby Bible Translation
For it was not by law that the promise was to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world, but by righteousness of faith.
World English Bible
For the promise to Abraham and to his seed that he should be heir of the world wasn't through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Young's Literal Translation
For not through law is the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, of his being heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith;

CommentaryWesley's Notes on the Bible
4:13 The promise, that he should be the heir of the world - Is the same as that he should be the father of all nations, namely, of those in all nations who receive the blessing. The whole world was promised to him and them conjointly. Christ is the heir of the world, and of all things; and so are all Abraham's seed, all that believe in him with the faith of Abraham
Of Self-Surrender We should now begin to abandon and give up our whole existence unto God, from the strong and positive conviction, that the occurrence of every moment is agreeable to His immediate will and permission, and just such as our state requires. I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.
"And now we are here to bring you this Good News. The promise was made to our ancestors,
And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the same kind of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised.
This means that Abraham's physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham's children.
God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesn't say "to his children," as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says "to his child"--and that, of course, means Christ.
And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you.
