After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”1After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”2But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”4And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”
And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able.” Then He told him, “So shall your offspring be.”5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness.6And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”7And he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
But Abram replied, “Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?”8But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”
And the LORD said to him, “Bring Me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a turtledove and a young pigeon.”9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
So Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.10And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half.
And the birds of prey descended on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.11And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and suddenly great terror and darkness overwhelmed him.12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.
Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.13Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.
But I will judge the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will depart with many possessions.14But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.15As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.
In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”16And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, behold, a smoking firepot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the halves of the carcasses.17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land—from the river of Egypt to the great River Euphrates—18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,
the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
