Peter 4
CSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding--because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin--1Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God's will.2so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.3For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
They are surprised that you don't join them in the same flood of wild living--and they slander you.4With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
They will give an account to the one who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.5but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God's standards.6For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
The end of all things is near; therefore, be alert and sober-minded for prayer.7The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.8Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
Be hospitable to one another without complaining.9Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you.12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.13But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler.
But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name.16Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.
For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?17For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?18And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
So then, let those who suffer according to God's will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator while doing what is good.19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
