Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,1Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."2"Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."
He answered them, "Why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition?3And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.4"For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'
But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,"5"But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,"
he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition.6he is not to honor his father or his mother.' And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:7"You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:
This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.8'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands."9'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'"
Summoning the crowd, he told them, "Listen and understand:10After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, "Hear and understand.
It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth--this defiles a person."11"It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."
Then the disciples came up and told him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?"12Then the disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted.13But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted.
Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."14"Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit."
Then Peter said, "Explain this parable to us."15Peter said to Him, "Explain the parable to us."
"Do you still lack understanding?" he asked.16Jesus said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also?
"Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?17"Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?
But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.18"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander.19"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person."20"These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man."
When Jesus left there, he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.21Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon.
Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon."22And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed."
Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, "Send her away because she's crying out after us."23But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, "Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us."
He replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."24But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
But she came, knelt before him, and said, "Lord, help me!"25But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"
He answered, "It isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."26And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."
"Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."27But she said, "Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."
Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was healed.28Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once.
Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there,29Departing from there, Jesus went along by the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there.
and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them.30And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.
So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel.31So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way."32And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way."
The disciples said to him, "Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd?"33The disciples said to Him, "Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?"
"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked them. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish."34And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few small fish."
After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground,35And He directed the people to sit down on the ground;
he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.36and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces--seven large baskets full.37And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full.
Now there were four thousand men who had eaten, besides women and children.38And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
After dismissing the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.39And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
