In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest:1On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak:
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.”2The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'"
Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,3So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows:
“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?4"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins?
Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.5Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing.
You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.6You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'"
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.7"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also.
Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD.8Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD.
You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.9You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house!
Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.10This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce.
And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”11Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'"
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD.
Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.”13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD.
And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,14So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all.
on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.15This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year.
