Hebrews 5
ESV Parallel NET [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
English Standard VersionNET Bible
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.1For every high priest is taken from among the people and appointed to represent them before God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.2He is able to deal compassionately with those who are ignorant and erring, since he also is subject to weakness,
Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.3and for this reason he is obligated to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people.
And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.4And no one assumes this honor on his own initiative, but only when called to it by God, as in fact Aaron was.
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming high priest, but the one who glorified him was God, who said to him, "You are my Son! Today I have fathered you,"
as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”6as also in another place God says, "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek."
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.7During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through the things he suffered.
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,9And by being perfected in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.10and he was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.11On this topic we have much to say and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,12For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food.
for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.13For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.14But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil.
