Hosea 11
ESV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.1“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.
The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols.2But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.3I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.
I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.4I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him.
They shall not return to the land of Egypt, but Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me.5“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria.
The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them because of their own counsels.6War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans.
My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all.7For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.
How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.8“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.
I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.9No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy.
They shall go after the LORD; he will roar like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west;10For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west.
they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria, and I will return them to their homes, declares the LORD.11Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah
Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.12 Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One.
