In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:" 1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
The LORD of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt." 2“Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.”
The word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet: "3Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,
Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?"4“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
Now, the LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways: 5Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.
You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it." 6You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.
The LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways. 7“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.
Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD."8Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD.
You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?" This is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. 9You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.
So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops. 10Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.
I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, olive oil, and whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all that your hands produce." 11And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD. 12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.
Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people, "I am with you"--this is the LORD's declaration. 13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.”
The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God, 14And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius. 15on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
