Psalm 39
HCSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm. I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence." 1I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.”
I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified. 2I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:" 3My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am. 4“O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!
You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah " 5Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah
Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. 6Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!
Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. 7“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools. 8Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool!
I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. 9I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.
Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand. 10Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand.
You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor. Selah " 11When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah
Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers. 12“Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers.
Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone." 13Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!”
