When the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 1Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,
the king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains." 2that the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains."
So Nathan told the king, "Go and do all that is on your heart, for the LORD is with you." 3Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your mind, for the LORD is with you."
But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: "4But in the same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,
Go to My servant David and say, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in?5"Go and say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD, "Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in?
From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling.6"For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.
In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven't you built Me a house of cedar?'" 7"Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?'"'
Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: 'This is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel.8"Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest in the land.9"I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.
I will establish a place for My people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not afflict them as they have done10"I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly,
ever since the day I ordered judges to be over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies." The LORD declares to you: The LORD Himself will make a house for you. 11even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you.
When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.12"When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.13"He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.14"I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
But My faithful love will never leave him as I removed it from Saul; I removed him from your way.15but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
Your house and kingdom will endure before Me forever, and your throne will be established forever.'" 16"Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'"
Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David. 17In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
Then King David went in, sat in the LORD's presence, and said, Who am I, Lord GOD, and what is my house that You have brought me this far?18Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
What You have done so far was a little thing to You, Lord GOD, for You have also spoken about Your servant's house in the distant future. And this is a revelation for mankind, Lord GOD.19"And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD.
What more can David say to You? You know Your servant, Lord GOD.20"Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD!
Because of Your word and according to Your will, You have revealed all these great things to Your servant. 21"For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.
This is why You are great, Lord GOD. There is no one like You, and there is no God besides You, as all we have heard confirms.22"For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
And who is like Your people Israel? God came to one nation on earth in order to redeem a people for Himself, to make a name for Himself, and to perform for them great and awesome acts, driving out nations and their gods before Your people You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt.23"And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods?
You established Your people Israel to be Your own people forever, and You, LORD, have become their God. 24"For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
Now, LORD God, fulfill the promise forever that You have made to Your servant and his house. Do as You have promised, 25"Now therefore, O LORD God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken,
so that Your name will be exalted forever, when it is said, "The LORD of Hosts is God over Israel." The house of Your servant David will be established before You26that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel'; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
since You, LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, "I will build a house for you." Therefore, Your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to You. 27"For You, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, 'I will build you a house'; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.
Lord GOD, You are God; Your words are true, and You have promised this grace to Your servant. 28"Now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.
Now, please bless Your servant's house so that it will continue before You forever. For You, Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing Your servant's house will be blessed forever. 29"Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever."
